Causes for Dry Feet and Cracked Heels

Before you begin to treat your dry feet and cracked heels, you need to know what causes the skin to become dry and rough to the touch. The most common causes are:

  • Cold weather. The cold fall and winter weather usually bring a low humidity and that can be a factor that contributes to dry skin on your feet.
  • Dehydration and not drinking enough water. When your body is dehydrated, it’s reflected on your skin. Excessive use of alcohol, coffee or black tea can also cause dehydration.
  • Taking really hot baths or showers or soaking in a hot bath too frequently or for too long. Even if you don’t use strong soap, if you frequently take long hot showers or baths, the skin on your feet may become dry.
  • Using harsh, drying soaps on your feet. Soaps that contain strong chemicals and hot water remove the natural oils from your skin and you skin loses its natural moisture, leaving it dry and rough.
  • Not moisturizing your feet. Usually when we moisturize our skin after showering, we forget about our feet. Use a gentle and natural lotion to moisturize your feet.
