Characteristics of oily hair

Oily hair never looks fresh and clean. It remains stuck to the scalp and therefore it has no volume. This type of hair easily attracts dust and other impurities, so it has no shine.
Although you probably wash your hair daily, it usually get greasy pretty quickly and you often think that people around you have an impression that you don’t wash your hair that often. Those who have a big problem with oily hair, sometimes wash their hair once or twice during the day.

The reason for the appearance of oily hair

Helpful tips and tricks for oily hairOily hair is a result of the excessive secretion of sebum from the scalp’s fatty glands. Sebum is a natural oil that protects the scalp and hair from external damaging.
The reason for the secretion of excess amount of sebum can be both internal and external. Oily hair can be genetically inherited or it can be a result of hormone changes in the body. Therefore, the problem with oily hair is most common in adolescents and women (because of the different levels of hormones during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause).
The appearance of oily hair can also be caused by frequent washing with too aggressive shampoos. Such shampoos will dry the scalp and it’ll cause over-activity of the glands that secrete sebum. Other causes include stress and frequent use of styling products.

Helpful tips and tricks for oily hair

Use shampoo for your hair type. Don’t use shampoos that are too strong and that would dry your scalp and roots. Choose a natural shampoo for oily hair or gentle shampoo with a neutral pH. That way you can wash your hair as much as you need, without worsening the situation.
Be careful while washing your hair. While washing your hair, don’t use your nails and don’t apply too much pressure on the scalp. Apply the shampoo and gently rub it in with your fingers.
Avoid using hot water. Oily hair shouldn’t  be washed with hot water. Use lukewarm water, and if you can, try to do the final rinse with cool water.
Keep the hot appliances away from the roots of your hair. When you blow dry your hair, hold the appliance away from the roots. Hot air stimulates the sebum secretion. The hot appliance should be at least 10 inches away from your hair and don’t keep it in one section more than 15 seconds.
Keep your hands away from your hair. If you have a habit to touch your hair and scalp constantly during the day, quit it as soon as possible. Constant touching of your hair and scalp will make the hair more oily and dirty.
Reduce the use of styling products. Styling products can make your hair look nice, but they can also make your hair more oily.
