DIY Homemade natural hair dye or lightener

Hair dye from natural products

We all know that the easiest way to dye our hair is with chemical hair dye. But the hair dye that we buy at the beauty stores contains hydrogen peroxide that damages our hair instantly, also most of them contain ammonium that smells awful and also many other ingredients that are actually toxic. Try some homemade natural hair dyes that will dye your hair naturally, and that are also safe for you and the environment.

Hair dye and lighteners from natural products

Homemade natural hair lightener with lemon juice

Sadly there’s no homemade natural lightener that can make your hair bleach blonde. But there are many natural ways that can help you lighten your hair. Here is a homemade natural hair lightener with honey: Make a very concentrated tea from chamomile. Take 2 cups of boiling water and put around 10 tea bags of chamomile tea. Leave it until it is cool and add the juice of 2-3 freshly squeezed lemons. Strain the mixture through a sieve and place it in a spray bottle. Spray your hair with this mixture until it is fully saturated and comb it with a wide tooth comb. Go outside and dry your hair onto the sun for at least 30 minutes but no more that an hour because it can dry your hair. After that you can wash your hair with a shampoo and  conditioner.

Homemade natural hair lightener with honey

Lightening your hair with honey might not get your hair as light like the lemon juice, but it’ll still lighten your hair a bit, plus it won’t dry it like the lemon juice. In a bowl, mix 3-4 tablespoons of honey and 3-4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before you apply it. If you have longer or thicker hair, double or triple the recipe. Apply the mixture to your hair, put a shower cap on and leave it for 30-40 minutes or an hour if you can. Shampoo and condition your hair as usual. Because the homemade natural lightener with honey doesn’t dry or damage the hair, you can use it as often as you like.

Homemade natural hair dye for red hair with hibiscus

If you want to dye your hair red with natural products, here is a homemade natural hair dye with hibiscus tea. In a small pot add 2 cups of water and 5-6 tea bags of hibiscus tea. Let the tea simmer for 20-30 minutes until it reduces by half. In the end you should have one cup of very strong hibiscus tea. Apply the tea to your hair, comb your hair with a wide tooth comb, put a shower cap on and leave it for 30 minutes up to 1 hour. After that shampoo and condition your hair as usual.

Homemade natural hair dye for red hair with rosehips

This is another homemade natural hair dye that can make your hair redder. In a small pot place 1 cup of rosehips and add 1 cup of water. Boil the mixture for 10-15 minutes and leave it to cool completely. After it is cooled down, strain the tea. Apply the DIY natural hair dye on your hair, put a shower cap on and leave it for 30 minutes up to 1 hour. Wash your hair with your favorite shampoo and conditioner.

Homemade natural hair dye for brown hair with black walnut husks

If you want to dye your hair brown, you can make a natural homemade hair dye from black walnut husks which actually is very effective. If you put less black walnut husks, the brown shade will be lighter, for a darker brown use more husks. Take the husks from 10-15 black walnuts and put them in a pot that you don’t mind staining (you’ll probably be able to wash it but just in case). Add 2 cups of water and boil the black walnut husks for  for 20-30 minutes and leave it to cool. Apply the mixture evenly on your hair, put a shower cap on and wrap your hair with an old towel that you don’t mind staining. At this point remove any spills from your skin or have someone to clean your skin with wet wipes. Leave the mixture for 10-30 minutes and rinse carefully. Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner. Important! 1. Don’t let your pets drink the liquid or eat the husks because they can be toxic for them. 2. It is best to apply this mixture outside and wear clothes and use towels that you don’t mind staining, because this can really stain everything. 3. Wear some gloves and protect your skin with coconut oil or body butter especially around your hair line, or better yet, have someone to clean the spills on your skin for you. This recipe make very runny mixture that can be a bit hard to apply. If you want thicker version, you can search for a recipe that uses black walnut husk powder, or you can thicken the ‘tea’ with a little xanthan gum, guar gum or even some corn starch.

Homemade natural hair dye for black hair

Again, there is no simple way to get black hair, but there are natural products that you use like indigo or black henna powder. If you dye your hair with indigo or lack henna powder, here is what you can do to make your mixture even more intensive. Take 5 tea bags of black tea or 5 tablespoons of coffee and brew them in a cup of boiling water. Strain the mixture and use it to make your indigo or black henna paste. It will make your mixture stronger and you’ll get better results. Also we should warn you: You might not get the result that you hoped for. These natural dyes will not give you some extreme color, just light or dark shades of natural hair color. If you do not want to use some of the tips above, but still want to dye your hair naturally, try using some quality henna powder. With it you will definitely get some great shades of red, brown and black.
